Gorge Magazine Special Edition: Weddings!

The winter edition of the Gorge Magazine is out!  The best part about it is the new “complete guide to Gorge Weddings” insert – it’s a great resource for engaged couples and brides/grooms-to-be getting married in the Columbia Gorge!  We were lucky enough to be involved in this year’s guide and with the help of lots of great vendors designed a rustic Gorge wedding photoshoot that highlighted Columbia Gorge vendors exclusively.  The goal was to show that you don’t have to bring in your own vendors from anywhere else – we have everything you need right here to craft the perfect wedding.

Here are a few sneak peeks but I would encourage you to pick up your Gorge Magazine today and use this puppy as a resource to help plan your wedding.  The vendor guide at the back and featured vendors throughout the publication will give you a good start to searching out all the best vendors in the Gorge.

A few details about the shoot: A very Fall themed shoot held at the Gorge White House – a very appropriate venue for this time of the year!  Features all things local that can be found right here in the Gorge: delicious wines, yummy hard ciders, a seasonal menu sourced from local Gorge farms, flowers from the gardens at the Gorge White House and lots of other local flavor.

It took a rockstar team to put this together and what a great collaboration it was! A big thanks to everyone that helped make this shoot beautiful! A special thanks to Heather Sullivan (fellow wedding planner for Love Notes) for helping coordinate all the details of the shoot.

Friday Fav’s

Happy Black Friday! Hope you are out finding some great deals or perhaps staying home and cozy on this long holiday weekend.

For our Friday Fav’s today we are sharing some trends we are seeing for table linens. Beyond the basic white- there are so many ways to add texture and color to your wedding decor. I especially love the use of moss or leaves on a table to bring the outside in. Or how the perfect plaid can add several colors at once. Mixing up patterns on tables, while staying in the same color palette, can give your wedding a cozy, at home feel. Don’t be afraid to find multiple colors or textures!

Check out these inspirations and follow the links below to add some warmth to your wedding table decor!

Vendor Spotlight: Boda’s Kitchen

We started this local series last year but haven’t been too good about keeping it up.  Well…we are reviving it this year and will feature a new local Gorge vendor each month.  We are kicking off with one of our favorite local caterers – Boda’s Kitchen.  We had the pleasure of working with them on several weddings this year including one with a pretty rad burger bar and one very foodie wedding with lots of local flavor.  If you are looking for a caterer to work with you to craft the perfect special menu for your day look no further – Boda’s can do just about anything and with a smile!

We recently caught up with Sirota (a.k.a Boda) and here is what she had to say about seasonal favorites, advice to couples searching for a caterer and Thanksgiving traditions.

Boda's Kitchen

How long have you been catering?

I began doing event management for a large caterer in Portland 11 years ago – so that’s how long I have been in the industry.   It was love at first wedding.  After moving to Hood River 7 years ago, I worked with several local caterers in serving and catering management. I have been on my own catering for the last 2 years.

What do you love about catering weddings?

So many things!  I love that we get to be intimately involved in a day that is arguably the happiest and most important day of a young couple’s lives.   I love that every wedding has its unique personality and set of challenges.  I never get bored.  I still have to stay away during the ceremony because no matter what, I still cry at weddings.  It may seem sappy, but they make me cry every time.

Boda's Kitchen

What advice do you have for couples seeking a caterer?

Don’t be shy about asking lots of questions.  Caterers know that this is probably the first time you have ever planned an event like this and there are probably lots of things you don’t understand about how the day will come together.  In addition to your venue and planner, your caterer is one of the most important components to making sure the day goes how you envisioned.  Make sure you understand how they will operate.  When will they arrive?  What is included in their labor?  Will they set up tables/chairs?  Will they Set out decor?  How will the servers be dressed? How will the food be presented?  How will it be prepared?  Will it be cooked on site?  Any caterer should be open and honest about how they operate.  Feel free to ask for pictures.  A catered wedding is not inexpensive, so make sure you know exactly what you are paying for.

Can you tell us some of the unique things that you have done at weddings that stand out?

The Ice cream bar we did was really fun.  The bride wanted an ice cream truck but couldn’t find one to serve at the wedding, so we created a fun table full of toppings like salted caramel sauce, huckleberry coulis, Marcona almonds, candied hazelnuts, Assorted Valrhona chocolate chunks, fresh berries, etc.  Our staffed served up 5 different ice creams and guests had a blast!

What are 3 favorite seasonal ingredients to cook with and serve for each season?

Winter: Fresh Dungeoness Crab Cakes with Spicy Remoulade. I can’t get enough crab in the winter time!

Spring: Wild Spring Chinook is arguably the best salmon you can get!  Simply grilled or en Papillote with Fresh Asparagus, Morels & Hollandaise – YUM!

Summer:  Corn Anything! Our Grilled Corn Salad with Cotija, Mint & Red Bell Pepper is wildly popular.  Corn Fritters with Spicy Guacamole & Chicharrones, Corn on the cob with Paprika Butter… I could keep going.  I include Fresh Fruit and Veggies in everything!  Grilled Peaches with Maple Marscapone.   Heirloom Tomato & Peach Salad.

Fall: I LOVE Brussels Sprouts.  I do a Balsamic Glazed Brussels Sprout dish.  Our Korean Brussels Sprout salad has a cult following now.  Brussels Sprout Caesar Slaw with Garlic toasted Pumpkin Seeds.  The Porchetta stuffed with House made Italian Sausage and served over braised Apple & Cranberry Chutney is a very nice fall entree.

What are your personal favorites and culinary traditions for Thanksgiving?

Obviously I love feeding people – that’s why I do what I do.  Along with our dearest family and friends, we always invite the “orphans” along for our Thanksgiving dinner.  I hate the idea of people being alone on what is one of my favorite holidays.  As far as culinary traditions, we don’t always do the same thing except our turkey always goes in a brine for 2 days.  My husband likes his turkey smoked and I prefer the traditional roast, so we will always do one of each.   The potatoes are always made in HUGE quantities and always my roasted garlic buttermilk potatoes that we are known for.  I play around with different side dishes though. I like to try new things and usually use the dinner as a chance to experiment on very willing guinea pigs.

Anything in particular you are looking forward to for next season?

Just more… more people, more friends, more food, more joy.  I love it!

Meet HNH Team Member: Sara

I want to introduce a very special member of the Hitched in the Hood team.  She’s been with us through the entire 2013 wedding season and she totally rocks!  She’s a crafty genius and brings so many great ideas to the team.  She’s planning her own wedding this year and will be taking us through her process on the blog over the next several months.  We are excited she will be joining us for the full season again next year and will be the lead day-of wedding planner (even though we are only offering full-service next year – day-of is still the most important day of all!).

Meet Sara

“These are a few of my favorites things” – Fall, the first snow, fresh flowers, pretty office supplies, going on walks, time with my sister, smoky red wine, pretty packaging, painting on wood, yoga, handmade gifts, organizing, grace and modesty, the local farm stand, being at the river, new hiking trails, family/my parents, favorite candles and paper goods

 Sara

My name is Sara and I am so excited to be working with Hitched in the Hood for the second year in a row! I learned a ton last year and I am looking forward to making our couples’ wedding dreams come true. Last year I realized how valuable hiring a coordinator is – it is a privilege to let family and friends be able to spend time and enjoy the day with the bride and groom knowing that we are there managing everything – down to the last detail.

I love anything that is hand made. I love the pretty! I love when couples’ personal elements or décor are sprinkled throughout their wedding (When the guests’ say “That is sooo them”- it’s the best!).  I am obsessed with all things country, rustic and outdoorsy. I can usually be found in my craft room engulfed in one (of many!) of my current projects. I love to paint, sew, craft and can make just about anything your wedding heart desires.

Make Something Today

I myself am in the midst of planning our own wedding next October! I am marrying an amazing man I have been with for three years. I have the honor of taking on his two awesome little girls as my own. The girls often find inspirations for “our wedding”- they call it (love it!).  We have a date, gorgeous venue (with a barn- swoon!) and an incredible photographer booked so far. I look forward to blogging more about our process. As a family we love to be outside, doing something new together, or playing one of our favorite games.

I am excited to get to know you as a couple and coordinate your wedding day!

Hood River Wedding Shoot

This sexy couple is Sara and her fiancé Cory – they were recently models for a photoshoot for an upcoming spread in the Gorge Magazine Wedding Guide.  Consider this your “sneak peek” and make sure to check it out.  It’s coming out at the end of November!

Hitched in the Hood 2014: Revamping the “package”

I wanted to address this subject on the blog b/c I get a ton of inquires from potential clients asking “what types of packages do you offer”, “how much is your day-of/month-of package”, etc.  After giving it a lot of thought we will no longer offer “packages” and will be focusing solely on just one main wedding planning service – a custom “Hitched in the Hood” experience (I just don’t like the word “package”).  I would think of it as full service planning but tailored specifically for the Gorge bride.  After a few years of offering several different packages we’ve come to know what our busy clients are looking for and will concentrate on those things but customize it to suit each couples needs and wants.  We tend to get a lot of busy destination brides (in fact we’ve NEVER had a bride from Hood River) that are looking for a liaison on to ground in Hood River who knows the area and has relationships with all the venues and vendors to help navigate through the wedding planning process.

When we did offer day-of/month-of planning I found myself doing SO much more than just the logistical coordination the month before the wedding.  I ended up working with my clients for a year or six months leading up to their wedding and really getting to know them to help them craft a wedding that truly reflected their unique story and personalities.  I wanted to help them create the wedding of their dreams and execute it flawlessly and seamlessly.  I believe the only way to do this is to give it my all, to make myself available to each client for all their questions, concerns and just for those exciting wedding planning moments when they want to call and tell me about a great idea they have.  I can’t do this by only offering month-of or day-of and doing the “clipboard” hand off a few weeks before the wedding.  I also don’t feel like I have much control over the outcome of the day b/c I haven’t been involved in all the intricate details of the planning process.  We want to work with our clients from day one of their planning process through their wedding day and hopefully make long term friendships out of the deal (keeping updated on how their love stories unfold!).

Given this change in focus we will also be taking less clients next year so we can really focus on the individual attention of each unique full service planning couple.  We won’t be doubling up on weddings in one weekend or taking any weddings on back to back weekends.  We truly want to give you a wedding planning experience you won’t forget and one that takes the burden off of you and let’s you focus on your blissful engagement period.

We worked on a little video over the summer that I think sums up the experience we try to offer each of our clients.  We focused on the wedding of Erin & Kevin that really reflects our process from start to finish.  They were a busy destination couple from San Francisco that were looking for someone to help them identify vendors that fit their style and needs and help them take some loose ideas and design a wedding that really highlighted all their loves.  They are big time foodies and so we worked to craft a day that combined all of their favorite things from the food to the table settings.  We were able to design a wedding that really reflected these two and their unique personalities.

Hitched in the Hood from Giselle Kennedy on Vimeo.

We will still offer hourly consulting for those clients that aren’t looking for the full service wedding planner but would like the expertise of someone that knows this area and needs a little guidance in the early days of their wedding planning – vendor selection, rehearsal/welcome reception assistance, etc.  We will also offer custom venue searches as well since we get a lot of folks from far away looking for help finding just the right venue to suit their needs.

Rustic Barnwood Tables

Our sister company, Riverhood Rentals will be offering custom design/rental packages and staging/set-up for those clients that would like to some assistance designing a wedding or consultation on what to do with their venue space but not necessarily looking for wedding planning services.

And if you are just looking for help day-of we can offer referrals to some great local coordinators that just focus on day-of so feel free to reach out to us for a list of recommended day-of coordinators.

We are just starting to book wedding clients for next year and looking forward to possibly working with you on your dream wedding!
